Tatsuya Nakatani
-Percussionist-
BIOGRAPHY:
Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion) is originally from Osaka, Japan. In 2006 he performed
in 80 cities in 7 countries and collaborated with 163 artists worldwide. In
the past 10 years he has released nearly 50 recordings on CD.
He has created his own instrumentation, effectively inventing many instruments
and extended techniques. He utilizes drumset, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing
bowls, metal objects, bells, and various sticks and bows to create an intense,
organic music that defies category or genre. His music is based in improvised/
experimental music, jazz, free jazz, rock, and noise, yet retains the sense
of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music.
In addition to live solo and ensemble performances he works as a sound designer
for film and television. He also teaches Masterclasses and Workshops at the
University level. He also heads H&H Production, an independent record label
and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was selected as a performing
artist for the Pennsylvania Performing Artist on Tour (PennPat) roster as well
as a Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant.

" Nakatani's sparse punctuation suggests observance of esoteric ritual
"
---Julian Cowley, The Wire Magazine, UK---
" Orchestral brilliance, Tatsuya Nakatani is a methodical musician concerned
with the development of an idea in time. His beginnings are arresting; his endings
are satisfying.
The right duration and variety of events are fully charged with a visceral intensity
that can captivate a true listener.....
The music is clear. This CD merits close listening. It will purify any space.
"
---Review by Eric Zinman, Improvisor Magazine---
" A special gift for ultra subtle sounds and a great attention to detail...
quite breath-taking "
---"Green Report 12" Solo Percussion Disk Review
by Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music gallery, NYC---
" Nakatani, one of the few cats who has truly mastered bowed metal percussion,
using gongs, cymbals, and Tibetan singing bowls to get a full range of textural
delights
and rich, sonorous drones. "
---"Limn" Disk Review by Michael Anton Parker,
Downtown Music gallery, NYC---
" A master of percussive dynamics "
---"Lovely Hazel" Disk Review by Derek Taylor,
One Final Note Magazine---
" His playing combines minimal gestures with real texturalism and an almost
painterly approach to percussion; in some ways, he is operating in a space similar
to that occupied by Le Quan Ninh. "
---"Green Report 12" Solo percussion Disk Review
by Jason Bivins, One Final Note magazine---
" Nakatani's contributions are crucial to the proceedings, taking a lead
voice on more than one occasion...Nakatani's approach takes in both conventional
and extended techniques,
and his unique use of a variety of percussion (including what sound to be bongos
and Roto-toms) is compelling. "
---"Come Sunday" Disk review by Matthew Sumera,
All About Jazz Magazine---
" The musicians develop ideas through breaths, scrapes, tones, flutters,
vibrations, and silence... The brew here is the the perfect timing of Nakatani's
bell and drum,
the overblown saxophone, the breath. "
---"From Between" Disk Review by Mark Corroto,
All About Jazz Magazine---
